May 7, 2013 — Eights and Weights

My alarm goes off at 5am. It’s still dark outside, which means it’s a week day and I am in a hotel. Gosh, the nights go by so fast.

Hopping out of bed is the hardest part of my day, but as soon as I do it, the next step comes easily. I quickly brush my teeth (‘quickly’ is a relative term), and change into my workout gear. The moment my sports bra goes on, I feel a sense of empowerment. I am disciplined. I am strong.

Today is a running day. It’s the most beautiful time of the year to run. I walk to the small street beside the hotel, and head south.

Five minutes into my run and I start to wish it was the weekend. If I were running back home in NYC, I would have had no less than three people smile at me by now. Running in New York city is amazing because I get so much support from random strangers. But today, it is just me. I am not home.

My run doesn’t go by fast today. It is painful and tiring, and I feel tension in my knee. But I try to focus on the music and somehow I get through the 5 miles. The sweat pouring from me is my badge of honor. I get home, stretch out my tired muscles, and hop in the shower.

The next few minutes are a blur of activity: showering, placing my breakfast order, and posting a quick Instagram picture about my morning workout. Then I’m out the door, and my day has really begun.

My day is packed with meetings, and that makes the time go by pretty quickly. Luckily, I had packed my lunches for the week when I left town, so I don’t have to think about what to eat.

At the end of the day, I get back to the hotel and just want to catch up on some TV. After one show, I do just a couple of minutes of yoga to pray, reflect on my day, and get my muscles relaxed. As sleep claims me, I hope this night feels longer than the last.
