I jumped out of bed and looked out of my room window, as has become my routine. The sun was out and I was excited that there were no lectures today. I said my prayers and logged into Facebook. Not very many people were online, so I decided to chat up Baba Abe, a much older colleague from my previous work place in Nigeria. He had this annoying habit of always advising me. Today’s bit was “Be careful of white girls” just before he logged off, leaving me confused. I was still in a state when I heard a rap on my door. It was my friend Olu from church inviting me to an off-campus hang out later in the day.
It went well, so well that on my way out Sasha, one of the white young ladies from church tapped me on the shoulder.. “I see you in church and have always wanted to say hi, but the opportunity’s never come up.” I smiled and took her outstretched hand with Baba Abe’s words coming back to memory. She was headed in my general direction so I agreed to walk her home and chat.
We walked and talked for over 3 hours, ending up among the rocks and hills on the edge of campus. I couldn’t help noticing she was “fearfully and wonderfully made” *winks *. On an impulse I asked that we go see a movie to which she agreed.
At the theater, the movie 42 was playing. It is the story of a black man living in the white man’s world and how he overcame racism to become one of the best in American Baseball, quite apt for what has been my life since September 2012.
As I began to enjoy the movie with the gorgeous Sasha at my side, and Baba Abe’s warning a distant memory, I thought I heard a loud shout. I opened my eyes to see someone standing over me. It was my friend Olu shouting in my ear that I was late for my 9.00m class.
Alas, there was no Sasha. I had only been dreaming!
