May 1st 2013 begins no differently from any other day.

I don’t remember what I was doing May 1st 2012 but I think it was more exciting than this.

Prayers for May and then I look at my phone. Waking up is one thing; getting up from warmth of my bed is another. I dawdle; there are no classes to look forward to, no intriguing conversations with classmates about the economy, no hallways filled with undergrads and naked mid-riffs to remind me that I am too old for school, no free food lying around begging to be eaten, no reason to yell out “Tribe Pride” just because …Sigh

11 days till graduation… What am I going to do without school? What am I going to do after school? What am I going to do on May 13th, 2013?

Robin is here. I can hear her singing even though I shut my windows last night. She is loud like that. It is time to get out of bed then.

“Well, don’t stop just for me.” I say as I raise my louvers to hear her better. She showed up sometime in late March and we have been friends since.

Back home in Lagos, I have two parrots. Let me rephrase; Mr Kiah has two parrots; and since what’s his is mine…

Their names are Zizu and Bubbles. Mornings with Robin makes up for time I don’t get to spend with them.

My phone rings and I groan. Time to say goodbye to Robin and get ready. I am going shopping with Jacky- we need graduation dresses. We also need jobs, diamond rings from boyfriends, vacations to Cancun, etcetra, but if there is anything I and Jacky are good at, it is living in the moment and forgetting our troubles.

I take it back; May 1st 2012 has nothing on May 1st 2013. I am an MBA in a few days; I will have a new dress in a few hours; lunch will be yummy Thai food; evening will have me rolling with laughter as Mr Kiah gets up to no good…

What more could a girl ask for?

Life is beautiful, right here, right now…
