March 7, 2013: Fantasy Queen

I am a courageous young woman.
I have hiked up a mountain, rode a roller coaster, kissed a dolphin, killed a bat, rode a Carmel, dune bashed, paint balled, flown in a chopper, rode a speed boat, danced in public, watched a dog have its puppies, worn a bikini, climbed the great wall, you get the drift. I kill bugs with my eyes wide open, I am indeed a plucky hero.
I am that bad. I take no prisoners, none at all. It may not seem like much, but it’s pretty amazing if you are me. So, before I jump from an airplane and conquer the world… Allow me to applaud myself.
One thing does wipe the adventurous smirk off my face… Cooking! I can cook… I know I can, but it takes far more courage than it takes to plant that first foot up a mountain to get me to bring out the pots and pans. I get tense… I pray and probably speak in tongues. I do not smile.
Nigerian/African girls are meant to know how to cook. Who would marry you if you can’t cook? Maybe my subconscious mind tells me I’m about to audition as a wife… You know, like a bachelorette competition. The tastier the food is, the more likely a Bella Naija wedding. No, I did not just roll my eyes.
And so I pray some more, hang around the kitchen and probably sway from side to side singing kumbayah, praying it does not end in tears.
The food comes out right. I hold my breath, because as much as I enjoy what I taste, it means nothing until someone else tastes it and gives me the thumbs up. Then I can breathe and laugh and live life like the brave woman that I am, bobbing my head to rap music.
Today, I am cooking and a special man in my life is going to eat it. My brother. Today is an adventure… today feels like I’m about to wrestle with two lions for a deer’s carcass. It is my fight… A fight to conquer and satisfy the taste buds of the man I love. So help me God.
