“Inhale…exhale”…
As I am reminded to co-ordinate my breathing between postures, my mind slowly relaxes, my soul feels calm but my body still feels beat up. You see, Mondays are not my best days; it takes me a while to get in tune with work for the week, so I spend the morning drawing up my to-do list or highlighting the ones from the week prior which I did not achieve and then stare and stare and stare into space until my mind is ready for work.
“Right foot steps back, come into a runner’s lunge”…
How appropriate! Today, I hit the ground running, sprinting as a matter of fact.
“Chaturanga”, I hear my instructor say. And as I bring my chest to the mat then lift off and come into a low-plank, I feel my hands buckle (more like vibrate) under me- I’m tired, very tired. Like I said earlier, I hit the ground sprinting today. By 10a.m I was spent; I had done statutory reports, reviewed agreements, liaised with the Nigerian Embassy in Jo’burg…the list goes on. That’s a typical day for me: work, work and more work in different forms. But I always remember to take time out to smell the flowers, watch the sunset, show love, enjoy a glass of something or a cup of anything, have a meaningful conversation, catch up with friends and exercise.
After coming in to all sorts of gruelling poses with my body screaming for help, we slow it down. I come into child’s pose and I ask myself if I wish I was a child again. No! I love all the joys and pains of growing up — being broke, making money, getting heartbroken, getting back up again, switching jobs, starting a business.
“Shavasana” — oh, how I love this pose; I’m just laying there…at peace. My mind is at rest, my soul is even calmer, my body in total relaxation. The rain starts and I love the sound of it, I have completely forgotten about the stress of today.
As I come into foetal position, I’m in a place of gratitude -thankful for family, for love, for friends, for life…not a bad day afterall.
Namaste!
