The day didn’t really get off to the best of starts. Who really wants to start their Sunday ironing a massive pile of laundry! If you jump into my pile of laundry I swear you would end up in another dimension. When did my life get to this? An endless cycle of chores, new responsibilities and enforced parenthood? Urgh! Somebody give me back my youth.

It gets better for the young heroine though. First of all, 12pm mass at St Gabriel’s and then Book Club! In they come, individuals who have come to embody the very essence of all that is modern sisterhood. From a range of continents, religions and cultures yet here we are like sisters from the same womb. I had to take permission to type while we were talking.

“What you writing?”

“Is it something naughty?”

“Are you writing about me again? You know you love writing about me. Is this for your blog again?”

The book club might have started because of our shared love of books, but also the need to catchup because big city living can make strangers of the closest people. First the catch up (including you alright, how’s work, guess who I saw, love your dress, I’m getting your hair cut next time), then the nibbling and finally the chatting about the book. This month its “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

The scientist, the teacher, the company owner, the lawyer and the PR lady. First laying eyes on ourselves as teenagers and still here over ten years later. The hair styles have changed, but the craziness is still there! I wonder what we would have told our seventeen year old selves?

“Worry less.”

“Enjoy yourself more.”

“You look fine, you are not fat!!!”

“Relax a bit more.”

“It’s going to be OK.”

If you have a safe haven of love, do you know how lucky you are? We can’t pick our families and in some cases we don’t have our families but our friends are our own creation of love and safety. They are the families we chose. The sanctuary we build and our port in the storm.
