March 18, 2013 — Ms A. Bonrue

march 18, bonrue

The one thing I don’t miss about Lagos is leaving home at 6.15am or earlier, daily. So when my dear alarm, in her hoity-toity fashion, said to me: “The time is 7.50am. It’s time to get up,” “Oh shattap.” was all I could muster as I shut her up and grabbed some more zzzs.

I woke up about 4 hours later because I had a divine dream… ’Twas about a dress.

Excitement had me out of bed and saying my prayers. I grabbed my latest sketch pad which in actual fact, is a notepad chock-full of doodles, clothes designs…and the occasional to-do list.

“I must make that dress today.” I said to myself excited. I had plenty of time before I was work bound. I think I heard my sewing machine snicker, maybe because the last time I made a full outfit was on September 14, 2012. I made a dress barely 24 hours before I had to use it! Since then, it’s been, nip-tuck-embellish, basically.

So, to prove him wrong, I got out of bed and into the sewing area but it wasn’t long before I realized my body had pulled a Bruno Mars on me without consultation. Let’s just say I ended up only attaching measurements to my sketch. The battle was deferred to someday SOON as all I could hear my body say was “Postpone and Relax”.

I made a cup of coffee and sat in front of the TV flipping channels…until PHCN struck. I picked up “Burma Boy” — figured I’d finish reading it. I didn’t realize time had passed until the driver called to know if he could come for me. I looked out the window, the sun was bowing out. “No. I’ll walk.” I needed the workout anyway.

I made the 22-minute walk to the office, passing by one human, two squirrels and maybe a dozen sheep. I really like it here. The greenery. The peace and quiet. The fresh air. The cheap food.

Moving here almost two years ago was a great idea but like Kenny said, “…know when to walk away…” I think I’m ready to conquer new frontiers.

Meanwhile, it’s 7.30 PM. My work day just began.
