June 7, 2013 — Afoma

June 7, 2013 - Afoma

I woke up with the widest grin and a bit of a migraine this beautiful Friday morning. Guess why? I’M FREE!! MY EXAMS ARE OVER! Having passed all of them, I’m officially done with my second year of medical school. I honestly could not be happier. In spite of the fact that I had a ton of books lined up for this period, and also planned to do a lot of writing, I did experience the ‘OMG What do I do with my life now?’ feeling. That got worse after I finished reading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ‘Americanah’ on Thursday night/Friday morning.

Gosh. These words fly away so fast! Now I totally get Eddie Murphy’s panic in the movie ‘A Thousand Words’. I spent exam season taking two hour naps on the floor when life got too rough and sending my mother messages about how she needed to prepare herself and my father for the possibility of my failing some courses this semester. I’m grateful to God for seeing me through all of them, and the friends I sent 2 am messages especially those who had exams like I did. They still took time to calm me down when panic took over. I apologize to my neighbors and I thank them for not calling the police when I played and danced to Dr Sid at 3am. I thank God for the librarians who didn’t chase me away when I stayed overtime in the library and my group mates for all their support. This is beginning to sound like an Oscar acceptance speech. :)

I plan to read more books post ‘Americanah’, to write more blog posts and eat more, seeing as I will be heading back home to Nigeria soon. I’m not ready for my mother to tell everyone who visits how skinny her daughter has become when in reality I’ve never been anything but skinny. Today, I spent two hours watching a surgery from the gallery as part of my last class for the semester. I have two additional weeks of hospital rounds (practice). And then its home sweet Nigeria. Ukraine has had its fill of me, for a while.
