It’s Monday. The first day of the week on some people’s calendar which includes mine. Before I started working, I often wondered what the buzz was all about — Oh I hate Mondays…blah blah — and why so many people had DPs carrying images like something horrible was bound to unleash itself the day after Sunday.
I choose to be different. But today stressed life outta me. Imagine waking up by 4am in the morning and leaving your house by past 5 just to get to work late — past 9am. I stay pretty far from work, and try not to complain about how stressful it is to come in from there every day with the transport services in Lagos. You wonder how the BRT driver maneuvers, so carelessly, with the load of passengers in his bus. Sometimes, he slams us hard on the road due to the presence of potholes which the government has refused to repair, and then it seems like he has a pack of animals in his bus and not humans.
He doesn’t apologize. He drives on, making me realize most of these drivers must have been working as Molue drivers sometime in the past. And then, you get to meet the ticketeers who sell tickets and act like you’re doing them a big favor for paying for your ticket fare. Some are even too tired or lazy to do their jobs. They don’t bother to count the number of seats left in the bus so that the rest of us standing in the sun queuing up for space get to join the present bus.
Nigerians….We are patient
I walked in the dark to the bus-stop this morning. I finally got to see my legs in my shoes in the light of the day around 7:40am after I’d joined the queue with dusty feet from walking on not-tarred roads as early as that time. I clean up and look ahead not bothering to insert my earplugs. I just wanna get to work and tell myself everything will be alright. Someday soon, by God’s grace, I believe.
