I like braids.
I like the versatility of them, the get up and go life, the not combing your hair everyday life. I’ve been wanting obnoxious, ass length braids for a while, but I fear for my barely there edges, so I’ve firmly ignored this braid craving till a few weeks ago while I was scrolling through my instagram feed.
This is what happens when you follow too many hair and beauty related accounts. I came across a hair style that seemed like it could work, spare my edges and still give me the braids versatility. Quick screen cap.
This afternoon, armed with some corn I’d just bought along the road (hey I have to eat), a book to read, and of course a picture of the intended hairstyle, I make my way to the salon.
20 mins later I’m still passing my phone around to different hair stylists who are arguing about the style. In truth, the main hindrance is the fact that no one really wants to do this aunty’s natural hair. Finally someone is appointed to commence the operation and she reluctantly comes over and it’s time to begin.
I’m reminded why I hate doing my hair. From the heat of the blow dryer, to the way the stylist is wielding her comb like a sword through my hair. *sigh* Why am I doing this again?
A couple hours later, some progress has been made, a small smile appears on my face, though I’m trying not to wince with my hair being pulled in two different directions by the two girls braiding.
About 3 hours and 4 packs of amigos later, braids are done, and I can’t wait to hop out of my seat, when I see one of the girls walking towards me with the bowl of steaming hot water.
Oops. I’d forgotten about this part. Having to recline in my seat and dip all these long ass braids into a bowl of hot water, and not burn myself in the process. And the part where they have to massage your head with a hot towel. Who send me really?
But it’s ok. Beauty they say is pain. *whips braids back and forth*
*Ouch*

About Mizchif: Mizchif is a person who likes to think of herself as interesting. An internet addict, in real life you may find her on any day of the week playing in body fluids that don’t belong to her in a hospital somewhere in Lagos, because she’s a doctor. She used to blog very actively over at meaningfulidly.blogspot.com, but now mostly spends her very minimal spare time retweeting awesomeness as @mss_sassy on twitter.
