July 6, 2013 — Sheila O

It’s 2 days to my 27th birthday, no I am not counting but growing up as an only child for 15 years made counting down to my birthday one of the fun things to do especially since my parents would sneak into my room the night before with gifts and cards so the first thing I saw would be my gifts. Now, I can only wish they even bother to get me a cake.
24 days ago I started my ’26 things to do before 27’ list and I am far from done. The plan was to go for a zumba class and then bake a cake, but that quickly turned into going to the market and cooking 3 types of soups, so much for my list but I did try some zumba moves while grating the okro, that should count right?
5 years ago, I watched a friend cry on her 27th birthday because she believed she would be married by 27, working and maybe with a kid. I remember thinking to myself, ‘Na wa o, 27, no work and not an ordinary boyfriend to show…God forbid!’ Well, I didn’t know any better and God with his fabulous sense of humour has decided to show who is boss as I turn 27 in 2 days …single. On the bright side, He has given me two fabulous job offers to pick from as a birthday gift.
I have 48 hours to be 26 but really who is counting? Age is nothing but a number they say so I shall be 21 for as long as I can be till the lines on my face choose to betray me, which would be a very long time from today because at 49, my mother is yet to have a single wrinkle.
Talking of my mother, she has given me 1 year to move out of her house…married and 2 years after that to make her a grandmother of 2 kids. That’s 1095 days to fall in love, get engaged, get married and have kids twice or maybe once.
Actually it is now 25 hours to my next birthday but honestly I am not counting.
