“Miss Sabirah!!”
I look up from my book and I know immediately that my day has started. I’m sitting at my work desk which I plan everyday to unclutter, and never do — a wild sea of glue sticks, pencils, erasers and scissors.
“Are you ever going to finish that book” a particularly pesky student of mine asks, I do my best to conceal my irritation since he has asked me this question a hundred times before.
“It’s a really good book so I’m trying to savor every little detail” I reply with a smile
“What is the meaning of savor?” he asks, this time I can’t hide it, and I roll my eyes.
“Darling, what do we do when we don’t know the meaning of words?”
He apologizes quickly as he runs for the dictionary. I complain about my students but only half halfheartedly, I really do love them. I smile to myself. I remember I haven’t had my tea, strawberry black tea today, let’s call it a special day!
“Miss Sabirah” another layer of my identity…
My day is going well considering that I have to somehow keep a bunch of rowdy pre-teens entertained while I write their report cards, I’m doing an okay job if I say so myself. I haven’t lost it… Yet, must be the tea.
Meanwhile my stomach is singing songs, not much unlike the pop music I’m subjected to daily; my students have indoctrinated me into the world of Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Olly Murs (he’s pretty good), One direction and the like. It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t enjoy these songs so much. I find myself singing them outside school at random times.
Time for dress rehearsals for the school production; no one told me that in addition to being the class teacher I would be a drama teacher, dance instructor, mom, sister, friend, shoulder-to-cry-on, confidant and a host of other things. But I have never regretted this choice (that doubles as the ultimate conversation starter) since I signed up, and everyday I’m thankful, because right now I know I’m where I’m supposed to be.
