Funkola 10

Birthdays are in reality just like any other day, except when the celebrant is your better-half in which case it is momentous. Today happened to be such a day for me. As the ‘birthday boy’, I wish I had the day off work but even the real celebrant didn’t get that so I had to go deal with my everyday challenges.

It is often hard to decide which of cracking endless spreadsheets, designing fancy presentations and dealing with (sometimes difficult) people is the most interesting aspect of my job. Dealing with people edges out the others for its sheer unpredictability. When a colleague upset me by getting angry at me for no reason, I had to resort to the ‘buffer’ zone to avoid blowing my lid, remembering that what brings us together is the common goal demanded by our employer. It’s good to be friends and merry with everyone at work but friendship isn’t the primary purpose of coming to work. I expected to be cross for a while with her but after an unreserved apology, we were back to working closely together.

As if that wasn’t enough, my boss waited until the exact moment when I was about to make my exit from the office to attend to matters of the heart to ask for all sorts of ‘urgent’ tasks… Asking if my wife was pregnant for planning to leave the office ‘early’, at closing time. Two hours and several tasks completed, I was glad to receive very good news I had been expecting for a while… From the same boss who seemed to be sent from hell to ruin my day an hour earlier.

The day’s job done at last, I was free to go back to my task of ensuring my Lady had a day to remember. This is also a wonderful opportunity to express what’s been on my mind all day: I consider myself extremely privileged to have Funkola in my life and I love her immensely.

The feeling of satisfaction I get from having achieved what I set out to at the beginning of the day is always a nice one… The nature of today makes the satisfaction extra special.
