“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life” Matthew 6:27
This was the scripture for my devotion this morning. It struck me, even though it shouldn’t by now, that each time I tend to worry, God always reassures me through His word that He has got me covered.
Time after time God has come through for my family and I, so it makes one wonder why I still worry sometimes. I guess it is only human nature, right? The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.
I need to watch what I say these days. Just this morning, Bionic my 3.5 year-old daughter was getting ready for school. I asked her to go put on her shoes. She replied “I am too tired for all these”. Shuo! Where did that come from? Then I realized she must have heard it from me… Sigh! Serious matter.
Any time she gets on my nerves or is not conforming to my expectation, I say “Wo! Omoyi, (Look! You this child), I am too tired for all these”. I didn’t realize, till I heard her say it back to me that I use that phrase and the word “tired” a lot. I need to stop.
The other phrase she says a lot in her britico accent is “O need e” (“you don’t need it”) which is always my answer to her when she wants a new toy she sees in TV commercials. Na wa o! That girl amuses me with all sorts of comeback lines.
I guess parenthood teaches you to lead an exemplary life. Children emulate our words and actions much faster than our instructions. Being a parent is hard work, even harder than marriage I think.
I do worry sometimes that I am executing this motherhood business all-wrong (did I just use the word worry? Father, please forgive me) but I remind myself that I am only human and I need divine intervention.
God, who gave Bionic to us, will give us the grace to bring her up right especially in this society that encourages consumerism, greed and selfishness.
Aloted, you just pray about it all and let God worry. Simples!
