7:50am and my Skype is ringing. I usually sleep in on Sundays. Thanks to the hour difference between here and home, I don’t have to be up until noon to watch church online. If it were any other person, I would roll over and continue my sleep, but it’s The Gentleman. He’s the only one that has the liberty to disrupt me anytime.
After 20 minutes of catching up, teasing, and jokes, I decide it’s time to sleep again. What?! I need my beauty rest! Some more time passes and I eventually open my eyes but don’t leave the bed. Something rings again, this time it’s my phone. It’s an old friend asking if I’ve heard the news. Jacob, our high school mate, was shot five times yesterday on his birthday. My body turns cold and a flood of thoughts begin to crowd my mind. I hadn’t heard. I just lost Ron, a dear friend, 20 days ago. I’m painfully reminded again how short life is, which is why I need to get out of bed. Every day I spend being lazy is a day I deprive the world of books, smiles, and great works that Baba God has tasked me to share. I’m still breathing, there’s still time to make things right.
I decide it is breakfast time, but I’m out of pancakes. I get ready and run down to the market with the hopes of just getting what I need but somehow I end up in the clothing store. Selah, the store owner, was very kind but didn’t have any bathing suits with enough material for my liking. I finally make it to the grocery store and just like that, I get my pancakes and I’m out fast. On my way home, I knowingly walk over an anthill and 10 minutes later regret it. Three ants latched onto my socks and one bit the crap out of me! Hopefully, I won’t break out in hives.
It’s 3pm and I finally reach home. My host mom just finished cooking too. I make my pancakes and eggs as we chat about life. It took me sometime, but I’m finally getting used to island life.
