Night cravings…
It has always been something. When I was in secondary school, I’d wake up at night, sneak into the living room and watch movies. It felt like I was the only one home. Sometimes, I’d quietly make pancakes beforehand.
Later, in my university years, I’d wake up at night to read, write, make MTN Xtra Cool calls, or just stare at the walls and ceiling; just be alone, until sleep came back for me.
Now, I get back from work and fall asleep in some unusual position, then wake up at an odd hour. I then watch TV till I know I absolutely have to go back to sleep (between 3.30am and 4.30am), then I make tea. Put the water on to boil, get out the purple cup and a spoon, put in two Lipton teabags, two sugars, only a little milk so I still get my “Lipton high”, pour in the steaming water, stir, and sip delicately until finished. Somewhere in the empty cup, I’d find a reason to go back to bed, believing tomorrow would be better, or, at least, less not-so-great.
I am yet to perfect my ingenious invention: a drip-like device that will allow me to sip the tea nonstop whilst lying down frailly, like an invalid from Victorian times; curtains drawn to signify how dire my need for resuscitation really is.
Of all my obsessions so far: sugar, sleep, a certain problematic boy-man, life expectations, future hopes, and making peace with the voices in my head, tea is really the most tangible and easily accessible of them all.
When it occurs to me that my love for tea might be a tad unhealthy, I remind myself of the millions of people out there who are alcoholics… or addicted to weed. I’m relatively normal after all. I still tell myself this even on the hot afternoons when I get up from my desk at work to make steaming hot tea. What is sweat, after all, but a harmless thing to be wiped away?
Oh, well… We’ve all got to go somehow :)
